The latest customs data shows that in 2025, exports of China’s Tinplate Packaging products (components) exceeded $15 billion, a year-on-year increase of 8.3%. Among these, deep-processed products—such as empty cans, can lids, bottoms, and sealing components—accounted for over 65% of exports. This marks a significant 23-percentage-point increase since 2020, completely shattering the old pattern where "raw sheet metal dominated and finished products were secondary."
    This signals China’s formal transformation from the world’s largest supplier of tinplate raw materials into a core manufacturing hub for high-end Packaging Components.
    A Decade of Transition: Shedding the "Low-Value" Label
    Over the past decade, despite being the world’s largest producer and exporter of tinplate, China was long trapped in a dilemma of being "large but not strong." Before 2020, the industry relied heavily on exporting raw coils and sheets, which accounted for over 70% of shipments. The average export price was merely 1,420/ton) and Germany ($1,385/ton).
    "At that time, we exported cheap coils, overseas manufacturers processed them into cans, and then sold them back to China. The majority of the profit was taken abroad; we only earned a thin margin on the steel itself," noted a veteran industry observer.
    This landscape began to shift dramatically after 2021. Data shows that from January to September 2025, while China’s tinplate coil/sheet exports grew by 17.46% year-on-year to 1.4774 million tons, exports of cans, lids, and components surged by 32%, with unit prices reaching 3 to 5 times that of raw coils. The market structure has officially switched from "coil-led" to "component-driven."
    Technological Breakthroughs: From "Manufacturing" to "Precision Engineering"
    Supporting this structural change is a comprehensive breakthrough in Chinese manufacturing technology and processes.
    On the material front, domestic tinplate has achieved ultra-thin high-strength limits of 0.08mm, with strength increased by 40% compared to standard A4 paper, meeting the demands of high-end food and pharmaceutical cans. In terms of environmental protection, chromium-free passivation, water-based coatings, and food-grade internal coating technologies have matured, reducing pollutant emissions by 90% and securing certifications from the EU FDA and US USDA. On the production side, the proliferation of AI visual inspection, high-speed stamping, and fully automatic welding has kept defect rates below 0.15%, with single-line daily capacities exceeding 5 million units, reaching world-class standards.
    Market Restructuring: Penetrating High-End Global Supply Chains
    With quality improvements, Chinese tinplate components are aggressively entering global high-end markets. Currently, the proportion of Chinese tinplate food cans imported by the US has risen to 38.4%. International brands such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and Heinz are increasingly adopting Chinese-made Easy Open Ends (EOE) and sealing components.
    Application scenarios have also expanded from traditional canned foods to energy drinks, ready-to-drink (RTD) coffee, milk powder, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and high-end gift boxes. Data indicates that high value-added categories now account for 41.7% of exports.
    Value Return: Doubling Margins and Gaining Pricing Power
    The optimization of export structure has directly translated into profit recovery. Currently, the average export price of tinplate components stands at 5,800 per ton—3 to 5 times the price of coils. The gross profit margin of deep-processing enterprises has reached 18%–25%, far exceeding the 6%–10% seen in traditional coil enterprises. Industry concentration has subsequently increased, with the CR5 (top five players) exceeding 55%, highlighting significant economies of scale.
    "China is transitioning from a mere supplier of tinplate to a global packaging solutions provider," said an industry insider. Chinese companies have begun participating in the formulation of international standards and are gaining more discourse power in the global supply chain.
    Future Outlook: From "Component Exports" to "Global Smart Manufacturing"
    Facing the future international trade environment, the advancement of China’s tinplate industry is far from over. On one hand, under the EU’s CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism), achieving zero-carbon status across the entire industry chain is a key focus; currently, the recycling rate of raw materials exceeds 70%, and low-carbon tinplate has reduced carbon emissions by 62%, capturing a "green premium." On the other hand, relying on AI design and flexible production lines, customized services featuring small batches, multiple varieties, and fast delivery have become new trends.
    Furthermore, to circumvent trade barriers and stay close to end markets, industry leaders such as BaoSteel Packaging​ and ORG Packaging​ are accelerating the construction of overseas component factories in Vietnam, Thailand, and Mexico, promoting a new model of "Chinese Technology + Global Manufacturing."
    From selling sheet metal to selling components, and soon to global branding, this upgrade in China’s tinplate industry is not just an adjustment of product structure; it is a microcosm of the leap from "Made in China" to "Intelligently Manufactured in China" and "Value of China."
